Reading

The intent of Reading teaching at our school

We start the teaching of reading at the beginning of Reception through the teaching of phonics. We use a systematic synthetic phonics programme called Read Write Inc.

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics programme which helps children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.  The programme is designed for children aged 4-7 however we continue using the programme to teach children to decode beyond this if they are older but have yet acquired the needed skills for fluent reading.

How will RWI be taught?

All children are assessed regularly by our Reading Leader (Mrs Gascoyne) so they work with children at the same level. This allows complete participation in lessons. We teach a daily 30-minute phonics session in school and children will have materials sent home appropriate to their stage and reading confidence which can be used by parents to reinforce what they have been taught.

Talk Through Stories

Alongside this, we follow the Ruth Miskin 'Talk Through Stories' programme. Each week, a different story is shared with reception aged children and new vocabulary from the story is introduced to the children.

Reading Comprehension

Once children are confident at decoding and become fluent readers they progress to learning the skills of comprehension.

After completing the RWI Comprehension programme (usually completed in KS1), reading comprehension, is taught using an approach called VIPERS. This focusses on the key reading skills children need and is matched to the content domains for the end of KS2 reading test framework.
